Amalia Brujis creates a multitude of stories with her acrylic on canvas paintings ranging from 1991 to present.
Miami-based painter Amalia Brujis exhibits artworks in oil and acrylic. "Since childhood, I've been enthralled by painting people. Initially, I painted these figures walking or running toward the horizon, blending into the sand and sea colors. Inspired by the deserts and ocean near Lima, Peru, my hometown, these landscapes evoked a sense of loneliness and nostalgia. Now, the complexities of human interaction in Miami, New York, London, and Tel Aviv have become my new inspiration. I capture images in streets, museums, and train stations, and paint people in urban areas without architecture. I aim to convey a sensation of outer space and solitude.
My current work, "walkers," reflects the dialogue between childhood memories and my evolving painting style. Descending from European immigrants, I see how these characters fade into the distance, just like memories of departed loved ones. As an immigrant with children worldwide, these people in streets, airports, and train stations are part of me. They represent the information in my genes and I aim to create depth, immersing the viewer in my paintings. "The people I paint have a place in my universe. They come and go, with some in a hurry, while others seem lost or lonely. Each person has their own story. Amidst the multitude, there is both loneliness and a shared destiny, as humanity moves toward the same place."
